Remember the Serenity 2008 patch set I mentioned a while ago? TFAW has it for sale! And still doesn’t have descriptions or any pictures of any of the four patches in the set except the one.
“Collect four patches as seen in Joss Whedon’s sci-fi epic, Serenity, with this patch set!”
Which is well and good but we don’t get to see which patches or what sizes, making it kinda hard to tell if it’s a good deal or not. However, I did some poking around and found that Forbidden Planet is selling four individual patches, including the one shown at TFAW, so if I had to guess I’d say these are what you’d be getting:
Still no descriptions or sizes, but at least we have pictures. Please note that I do not know for certain these are in the set at TFAW – although I’ll try to verify it – so buyers beware.
Updated: yup, those are the patches in question, which I prolly would have noticed had I clicked on the “more pictures” links underneath the main pic. Thanks Adam (in the comments) for the heads up.
These are variations on the patches on Wash’s jumpsuit in the BDM Serenity.
The wardrobe people modified Russian patches; I THINK both real and from the movie “2010”.
The one with the swoopy rocket had the word “LYNDONO” in place of the Russian lettering.
I don’t know if the images are still up in the archive section, but Wash’s jumpsuit used to be shown at the Propstore of London site.
Oooops!
There are still two examples of Wash’s jumpsuit for sale, with good pics of the patches.
You are correct, the set contains the same four patches you’ve shown. On the TFAW product page you’ve linked to, you can actually view images of all four patches by mousing over any of the thumbnails (under the heading ‘More Images’) located beneath the main picture. Cheers!
I have several of the screen-used patches framed up on my wall and they are, indeed, based on some of the patches seen in 2010. However, the patches in Serenity, while using the same pattern, are a good deal smaller than the ones in 2010. Not entirely sure why, except they fit better on Wash’s shoulder 😉
FYI, the 5-sided patch is a Soyuz patch.
The round one says “Intercosmos,” which was the Soviet space program that allowed military from Warsaw Pact countries to participate in Soviet space missions.
The triangular one reads “Leonov.” Alexey Leonov was the first person to spacewalk and commander of the Apollo-Soyuz mission. He was also the dedicatee of Arthur C. Clarke’s 2010: Odyssey Two and the vessel “Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov” from that book is his namesake. Thus the 2010 connection…
^What carl said, plus:
The yellow and red patch says “LEO” in Russian. Not sure what it’s from or about, but that’s what it says. (related to Leonov?)
Carl’s got it. The five-sided one is from the Apollo-Soyuz mission, or relatively close to it. Alexei was commander of the Soyuz end of that trip, just like Tom Stafford ran the American side of things. I’ve got the other two already, and I figure the Leonov patches are rejects; the triangular patch is supposed to have the names of the Leonov crew, and the shoulder patch is supposed to have the whole name, not just the first three letters… I guess they figured nobody could read Cyrillic.
