This has been reported around the place before, since Jewel Staite spilled the beans about an upcoming Firefly DVD release during her talk at the Supernova Pop Culture Expo in Australia recently. But TVShowsonDVD.com has gotten verification from FOX that it is indeed happening, and it will be for Blu-Ray disc format.
Jewel mentioned new commentaries for a special box set, but no other details have been released so far. Keep watching!
Dammit. Now I have to buy a Blu-Ray player…
I’m such a sucker for the latest tech, I got me a Blu-ray and HD-DVD player! Well, at least I’ll be able to watch the BDS and the BDM in hi res 😉
Any word on *when* we might be seein’ these?
Yeah, OK; FOX cancels the series, releases the DVD set which sells like hotcakes and their reaction is…
to try to shove Blu-Ray on us!
Thanks for nuthin’.
I resent the idea that I’m expected to shell out for a whole new technology to hear new commentaries for a series FOX didn’t support in the first place.
I’m beginning to feel that marketers have very little respect for the Browncoats, seeing us as willing to buy anything to keep our dream alive.
Hi Mike
FOX is not shoving blu ray on anyone, they simply support Sony’s High Definition format which was more popular to the consumer and beat out Toshiba’s HD DVD format. If HD DVD won, FOX would be selling that format. If you are happy with your Firefly DVD set, your not expected to buy anything. I’m excited Firefly will be offered in blu ray and look forward to being able to watch it on my HD TV, as it was meant to be watched.

To tell the truth, I’m a bit disappointed Blu-ray won the standards war. While it’s true that Blu-ray is the superior *hardware* standard, HD DVD has much better codecs. You can really see the difference with a movie like Serenity where the HD DVD version is so sharp, it can make your eyes bleed. Unfortunately, I’ve yet to see anything come close on Blu-ray.
Hopefully, Sony will get their act together and improve their codecs, now that they’ve won the standards war.
BluRay and HDDVD use the same codec, VC-1. That was not true at the very start but is so now. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluray#Codecs_.28coding-decoding.29
Seems like one can always find someone ready to complain about anything. If Fox decided to release this special edition on DVD, people would complain that the affordable $20 Firefly set was no longer available and had been replaced by an expensive (say, $40) new special edition set. Fox is doing the right thing by keeping the regular DVD version available for $20 and making the special edition on BluRay only.
Ya’ll are certainly welcome to your opinion, but I am interested in Firefly, not HD formats.
I want the additional information and insight that I imagine the new commentaries will offer, without having to invest in a new technology.
But, sillly me, I’m born of an age when you could bolt a 1959 tripower carburetor set-up on a 1979 engine; and technologies didn’t go obsolete in 3 years.
Mike
Consider Firefly Blu-ray, Firefly with fuel injection ;^)
