Favorite scene from Firefly is probably from “Serenity” when Mal first sees River in the box. The way Nathan says “huh” there always cracks me up.
The closing scene of “Out Of Gas.” Mal looking up at Serenity, completely ignoring the sale guy…
One of my definite favorites was when Jayne introduced Vera, and offered to trade her. It was really funny.
My all-time favorite scene would have to be the ballroom scene from Shindig. All of the different cultural aspects from the show mixed with Kaylee’s amazing dress mixed with Captain Tightpants… it’s all just a perfectly-wrapped bundle of Joss Whedon’s amazingness.
My favorite line is in Heart of Gold when they’re planning to scope out the competition and when Mal says, “Would you stoop to being on my arm?” I LOVE when Inara looks at Mal with sophisticated disgust and says, “Will you wash it first?” … Cracks me up every time.
The scene that always grabs my full attention is in the episode, “Train Job” when Mal and Zoe are returning the medicine and are confronted by the Sheriff Bourne and he says “You were truthful back in town. These are tough times. A man can get a job. He might not look too close at what that job is. But a man learns all the details of a situation like ours…well..then he has a choice.” And to that Mal replies “I don’t believe he does. ” And its true.
From Serenity part. 2
Agent Dawson is holding River hostage by gunpoint in the cargo hold. Mal, Zoe, and Jayne are heading back to the ship. Simon is standing in front of them, also with a gun. Suddenly the cargo door opens, in comes Mal, Zoe, and Jayne. Dawson attempts to tell them to drop their weapons, but before he can even finish, Mal shoots him square in the face. Dead. Done. Shows you just how badass Malcolm Reynolds really is.
Im not this is my favorite scene in the series but it is without a doubt one of the funniest. it comes from the begining of “Our Mrs. Reynolds” when we see two covered wagons approach each other. little do we know that is our beloved captain is posing as the “powerfully ugly” wife of Jayne. this caught me off guard and i laughed my ass off.
this scene also had my favorite line from Mal that we all know and love “if your hand touches metal, i swear by my pretty floral bonnet i will end you”.
outta gaz baby! lotsa flashbackz and stellar performance… best episode in my mind to introduce most of the chars in FF… very well put together too.
Like most people my favorite scene is the old kick em into the engine one ^_^
Ooooh, that’s tough. Hm… after a lot of deliberation, I’m going to have to go with the end of Objects in Space– you know, that looooong one-take shot that shows everyone? I just felt so *satisfied* with it as a series finale; watching all these characters I’d grown to love so much interacting like a family, living their lives… it really gave the sense, during the void between this and Serenity, that life would go on for them. It was a sweet ending.
“Can I mop your brow? I am *at the ready* with the fearsome brow-mopping.”
It’s nearly impossible to pick a favorite scene from a single episode let alone the entire series. I have humorous favorites, dramatic favorites, joyous favorites and sad favorites — and usually all of these in the same episode.
Many of my favorites have already been mentioned, but since it was the humor mixed with pathos in the show that made me a fan, and given that Mal & Kaylee are my favorite characters/relationship in the show, I’m choosing one from “Serenity (Pilot)”.
After Kaylee gets shot & Simon operates on her, the scene begins when Mal returns to the infirmary to look in on her and she awakens to say, “Captain?” and Mal replies with, “Hey…Hey little Kaylee, what’s the news?”
I love this scene because despite Mal’s retort that he’s a mean old man, everything about this scene shows that at his core he is not.
River fixing the Bible.
Oh, man…that’s tough.
Someone already mentioned River’s dance in “Safe,” but I REALLY like when it starts cutting back-and-forth between the dance and the gunfight. The soundtrack really comes into its own, the editing is great, and it perfectly embodies both River’s personality and Mal’s life. Also, gunplay.
This would be a tough question, but since so many of the top-notch scenes have been mentioned already, I’m gonna go with the only candidate for favorite scene that’s thus far unmentioned. (Thanks for making it easy, guys!)
In War Stories when Wash and Zoe are getting ready to rescue Mal:
Zoe: We’re gonna go get the Captain.
Kaylee: Oh. Good!
: Can they do that?
Jayne: No.
Wash: You know, there’s a certain motto, a creed among folks like us. You may have heard it: “Leave no man behind.”
Jayne: Suicide.
Didn’t have time to read all the other entries. One of my favorites (so hard to choose!) is at the end of Out of Gas. The look on Mal’s face when he sees Serenity.
Favorite scene eh?
Easy. The very first time that Jayne saw his statue.
Utterly priceless.
Or then theres the scene where everyone runs away from the ship leaving mal behind and he tries to fix the oxygen thingy whilst being shot and fails to recall the shuttle to save him.
Or the scene that River was playing with a stick and it turns out it was a gun.
Or the one that River took the gun and was all “No power in the ‘verse can stop me.” to kaylee.
Oops i went over. TOO MANY CHOICES
Utterly impossible to pick *a* favorite scene, but one of many is the Mudder’s Bar, when the singer first starts singing “The Ballad of Jayne”, and seeing the reactions on Mal, Jayne, Kaylee and Simon’s faces. Good times.
I need to think about this one — I’ll be in my bunk ;o)
I agree with so many others, it’s hard to choose one scene. Though, one of my favourites is from Jaynestown, when River apologizes saying, “I tore these out of your symbol and they turned to paper…”. Then she freaks out at seeing his crazy hair and runs away screaming. Zoe’s reaction is great — “Preacher! What the hell did you… WHOA”
I love that scene in “Objects in Space” where Simon is captured by Early and they have some communication problems.
“Are you Alliance?”
“Am I a lion?”
“What?”
etc.
Such a great insertion of humour and randomness in an otherwise tense situation.
One of my favorite scenes comes from “Train Job”
Jayne: “You know what the chain of command is? It’s the chain I go get
and beat you with ’til you understand who’s in ruttin’ command
here! Now we’re finishing this deal, and then maybe — MAYBE
we’ll come back for those morons… got themselves caught…
and you can’t change that by getting all… bendy.”
Wash: “All what?”
Jayne: “You got the light… from the console to keep you… lifting you up…
they shine like”… [starts grabbing at the air] “little angels”…
[Jayne promptly falls flat onto the floor.]
Wash: “Did he just go crazy and fall asleep?”
Simon: “I told him to sit down.”
Adam Baldwin at his best!
Too many funny lines to count. Best scene? My favorite is the Reaver chase in “Serenity”.
Favorite scene? Oooh…Jayne reading his letter from his mother and getting his hat is excellent (“War Stories”).
Or River communing with the cows in “Safe.”
Or the end of “Shindig” when Kaylee’s admiring her new dress. Or the middle when she’s at the party and having tech conversations with the guys and all the ladies that dissed her are all jealous. Or River talking to Badger with an imitation of his accent and providing the perfect distraction that no one uses. Or Jayne offering to get naked.
Or River “helping” with Petaline’s labor in “Heart of Gold.”
…Man, I love this series. It’s helped me to connect to people from all over, and it’s just generally…nifty.
My favorite scene is when Mal is in the bar with Zoe and Jane and the bar was celebrating winning the war, Mal comes up to the bar and talks with the pro-alliance guy, and he busts out with one of the greatest lines in the show:
Guy: “You know, I’m thinking you’re one of them Independents.”
Mal: “And I’m thinking you weren’t burdened by an over abundance of schooling.”
Classic!
Okay, my favorite is the “Hero Jayne”, simply because Whedon had the balls to write a planet where people Farmed?/Ranched?/Mined?/ Harvested?/Manufactured?- MUD.
I can see him pitching this…
But what I wanted to ask all you Browncoats is; Can anyone tell me how the episode intro graphics, especially the trianglular Heiroglyphics with lines off the one side, in vertical columns like chinese, were created, and by WHOM?
I would very much like to converse with that person, sooner than later.
(I am a screenwriter & Indie Producer in Washington state)
Peace,
Glenn
My favorite scene was from “The Train Job” when Mal kicked Crow into the engine intake of Serenity. I was watching the episodes from the DVD boxset well after the cancellation and I was floored that this was a network TV show. An awesome “Holy S***” moment that made me realize this show was not only clever and intelligent, but mature enough to not pull any punches with the audience on its realism.
Regardless of the fact that it was a minor character, it kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire series, thinking that anything could happen next.
“Safe”
The first instance wherein I feel Simon really felt comfortable getting smart with Mal after joining the crew: “I’m very sorry if she tipped off anyone about your cunningly concealed herd of cows.”
“Objects in Space”
The conversation between Jubal and Simon when they’ve just met. “Are you Alliance?”, asks Simon. “Am I a lion?”, answers Jubal and ponders the question. The sheer awkwardness of the situation is just so brilliant. Jubal is the weirdest character ever created. Love him!
Too many favorite moments to list, including much of Jaynestown. I think River’s (and Zoe’s) reaction to Book’s unleashed hair may have given me the best laugh of the week, the first time I saw it. Zoe’s line in particular still makes me smile.
Runner-up would have to be Book’s description of the “Special Hell.”
“Heart of Gold”:
Jayne: Good. Don’t know these people, don’t much care to.
Mal: They’re whores.
Jayne: I’m in.
quickest decision making ever π i guess i’d react the same way tho ;]
My favorite scene would have to be from “The Message” where Jayne gets his very stylish hat from his mother and he is obviously very proud of it then Jayne states: “How’s it sit? Pretty cunnin’ don’t ya think?”
Kaylee: “Sweetest hat ever.”
Wash: “Man walks down the street in that hat, people know he’s not afraid of anything.”
Jayne: “Damn straight.”
He has no idea that Wash is being facetious. Classic.
Wow, you really put me up to the challenge now. After a lot of thinking and brain-racking I decided that my favorite scene was from “Out of Gas”. It is when we recount to Mal’s first meeting with Jayne.
Jayne: “Yeah, that’s a joke.”
Mal: “Which one you figure tracked us?”
Zoe: “The ugly one, sir.
Mal: “Could you be more specific?”
Marco: “Do we look reasonable to you?
Mal: “Well, looks can be decieving.”
Jayne: Not as decieving as a lowdown… dirty… deciever.”
Mal: “Well said. Wasn’t that well said Zoe?”
Zoe: “Had a kind of poetry to it, sir.”
Jayne: “You want I shoot them now, Marco?”
Marco: “Wait till they tell us where they put the stuff.”
Jayne: “That’s a good idea. Good idea. Tell us where the stuff’s at, so I can shoot ya.
Mal: “Point of interest. Offering to shoot us might not work so well as an incentive as you might imagine.”
I’ll go with the interrogation scene of the fed agent where Mal has Jayne get info from the guy and whispers to only scare him…Jayne replies “Pain is scary” and later when talking to the guy he is so disappointed when the guy talked so quickly “I was gonna get me an ear”.
From Serenity:
After Kaylee is shot by Dobson, the brief moment where Jayne is hunched down on the catwalk outside the medical area.
Why? To me, in this brief scene, you see that there is so much more to Jayne than just a muscle-for-hire. You can feel both his concern for Kaylee and the rage boiling against Dobson for his actions, at the same time.
Great scene. Great Show.
Our beloved river in “War Stories” after she’s just shot three henchmen with her eyes closed and quoting Kaylee:
“No power in the ‘verse can stop me”
i wish the series would continue so Joss would dabble more on her firearms training and not just the close fight one she did in Serenity π
Objects in Space, “I am Serenity.” I cry every time.
My favorite is also the Jayne Vera trade.
Oh, this is a hard choice!
But there will always be a very soft spot in my heart for the scene in Shindig where Kaylee finds herself a minor belle of the ball, surrounded by men and boys hanging on her every word about engineering, to the point where one is shouted down for asking her to dance. It’s such a lovely thing to see after her earlier snubbing by the society girls, and even Mal’s comment about how she’d look ridiculous in that exact dress.
In Out of Gas, when Mal looks at Serenity while the salesman says “You buy this ship, treat her proper, she’ll be with you the rest of your life.” He falls in love and sees his future before him.
And when Mal comes to in the infirmary, sees his family came back for him, and asks if they’ll still be there when he wakes up. Book assures him that they will and all seems right with the world. They are a family.
If you can even call it a scene… I love the moment in “Serenity” when we see Mal walk into his quarters, flip down his built-in toilet and take a leak. It’s a moment that tells the audience early on just how much this show is going to focus on atmosphere, story pacing and character detail, and it just feels unique in television.
Good pick, Doctorossi. Another point in that scene is Mal’s use of the water: he runs it just enough to wet his hands and shuts it off. This shows the scarcity of such things in the black and is just a wee attention to detail that can be easily overlooked but would stand out glaringly if Mal ran the water all willy nilly like.
Best scene is the dinosaur conversation that Wash has with… well, himself, I guess. For me, more than anything else that scene established the characters as being “real” because hell, I’ve done stuff like that when I didn’t think anyone was watching. That, and the dialog is hilarious. “Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal,” is a classic line for good reason.
My favorite scene is at the battle of Serenity Valley where Mal dodging through all the enemy fire to destroy the antiaircraft gun.
I took a while to post because it’s nearly impossible to pick a favorite scene from Firefly, but I finally decided on the scene that made up my mind to watch the entire series.
From Serenity, when Wash is playing with the dinosaurs:
“Yes… Yes… This is a fertile land and we will thrive. We will rule over all this land and we will call it… This Land.”
It hit my funny bone and I haven’t looked back since.
My favorite scene is from episode Out of gas< when Mal needs to rest and he’s closing his eyes then suddenly opens and ask his crew ” you all gonna be here when I wake up”? crew replies “yes” Mal said “Good”
