SERENITYSTUFF
For several years I ran a site called SerenityStuff.com, which came about because I realized I was constantly posting on forums and telling friends all about the cool new Firefly or Serenity thing I’d found — a new prop, some great filk songs, a funny t-shirt — and it dawned on me that it would be a lot easier to just post everything at one location and point people at it. Since then I’ve expanded it to include more geeky things than just the one – I have layers, you know — but there will always be Serenity stuff here for you to obsess and drool over. The easiest way to find it all is to search for what you’re interested in, or click here for everything tagged “serenitystuff.”
(By the way, if you have no idea what Firefly or Serenity are — you poor, poor person — the short answer is that Firefly is the fun, dramatic, science fiction western TV show that Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) created in 2003 which was mistreated by the network and canceled after 11 shows. Joss’ obsession, the fans’ obsession, movie studio interest, and massive DVD sales all helped bring about a major motion picture with the same cast called Serenity that premiered September 30, 2005, to rave reviews, underwhelming box office, and more massive DVD sales.
It’s set 500 years in the future in the aftermath of a galactic civil war in which the powerful Alliance won over the underdog Independents (called “browncoats”). A brilliantly gifted young girl, tortured and surgically altered by an unknown group, is rescued by her brother and hidden on a smuggler’s ship captained by an honorable man who continues to fight for his independence long after the war is over.
The even shorter version: it’s easily one of the best TV shows and movies I’ve ever seen. And, as misunderstood but beloved shows are wont to do, this one attracted thousands of fans who were so eager to buy Firefly and Serenity related merchandise that they didn’t let the mere absence of such merchandise stop them. They just made their own.
So did I. My shop is called Big Red Button and features T-shirts, buttons, license plate frames, Serenity packing slips, and more. But I don’t just want to send you there, I want to send you everywhere!
Weapon replicas are out there. Actual props from the movie are on sale. People are creating their own jewelry and ship models and clothing and anything else they can think of. This is the list of as many of them as I can find.
SerenityStuff.com isn’t the only browncoat directory resource. FashionablyBrown.com and SerenityVerse.com link to just about everything Browncoats could want. There are numerous threads on the official Firefly boards, on FireflyFans.net, on SerenityMovie.org, on Whedonesque.com, and many other popular forums. And there are plenty of sites with news updates, fan fiction, and much more. But I’m focusing on just the merchandise because sometimes I can spend hours digging through a large and fast-moving forum trying to remember where I saw that link to the Lego guy.
