And on that note, I noticed that the first season of SNL is coming out December 5th. The complete season, uncut, with all the hosts and musical guests intact and everything. No more “best of” DVDs, no more actor compilations, it’s time to get the whole thing, just as we fell in love with it back in 1975, so we can start arguing again about which cast sucked less (but this time with proof).
The first season is a glimpse into what the show would become. It was still relying on guests, Muppets, Andy Kaufman appearances, short films, Albert Brooks, and musical stars for the bulk of the work, but little by little you can see the Not Ready For Prime Time Players begin to realize that they can blow everyone else off the stage. Dueling Brandos. New Shimmer. Mr. Bill. Samurai everything. The Super Bass-O-Matic 76. Baba Wawa. The Last Voyage of the Starship Enterprise. From the very first, SNL redefined pop culture, and here’s where it began.
And, since it’s a DVD, you can do what you wanted to do every Saturday night for the first ten years: skip the last half hour.
SNL75!!! Woohooo! Now hopefully they’ll continue the trend…
