The sunset was beautiful, and eternal.
“Are they sure?”
“I think so,” I said. “Just got an alert about it. It happened.”
“Wow,” she said.
We both watched the colors deepen and paint the sky with a rich red glow.
“How long?”
“They said it takes sunlight eight minutes and 20 seconds to reach Earth, so… maybe three or four more minutes?”
We lay back on the grass, and said the sorts of things you hoped you would say when the time came, and we held each other tight.
The sunset really was beautiful, for a few minutes more.
