We all have faces we wear, at different times.
There’s the face you wear at work: professional, efficient, alert.
There’s the face you wear for your parents: polite, cheerful, devoted.
There’s the face you wear for your lover: affectionate, caring, passionate.
There’s the face you wear for hitchhikers: friendly, helpful, harmless.
There’s the face you wear for the police: puzzled, attentive, oblivious.
There’s the face you wear for the jury: righteous, indignant, innocent.
There’s the face you wear for the other inmates: confident, untouchable, aggressive.
There’s the face you wear for your appeal: desperate, pitiable, misunderstood.
There’s the face you wear for your execution: defiant, vindictive, raving.
There may be another face you show someone after that, I couldn’t say.
Maybe that’s when your true face is finally seen.
