Just revealed at DVDActive.com, here’s the Collector’s edition’s shiny new outside. First impression: It’s not by 11th Hour. Sigh.
Second impression: it’s way better than the original key art. What do you think?

I have seen better fan stuff, but it is vastly superiour to the US original edition cover art. Nice to see Universal putting effort into the collector’s edition.
The LEAST they could have done was to comission 11th Hour.
*wanders off, mubling something about Blue Sun everywhere*
Yep, gotta agree with Dani. It’s better (no glam River!), but I would have loved to see an 11th Hour take on it….
Serenity on the pic is usin’ the side engines and the main one at the same time.. don’t think it’s ever done that.. the main is for space travel and the side is atmo ones…
Better than the last, but nowhere near great. The black overall color scheme doesn’t speak to me.
Thats not Mal’s gun either…..but yes, its way better. Shame the extras area all ones I’ve got from the Aussie release (bar the new commentary)
I’ll buy it to support Firefly/Serenity, but except for the new cast commentaries, it still isn’t up to par with the Australian 2-disc release.
Joss did a truly special 45 minute Q&A with an Australian audience that doesn’t seem to be on the US Special Edition.
Serenity IS a darker story than the Firefly TV series, but I was drawn to the lighter aspects of the movie (and then the series) and the black cover with the intense faces doesn’t speak to the adventure and action elements that sold me on the BDM. The positive thing to say is that the Universal marketing people weren’t allowed to attack this cover with their air brushes and photoshop tools! I guess the change I would make would be to use the dark blue of the movie posters rather than black.

That is one of Mal’s guns. See Serenity the Official Visual Companion page 126 without the bronze sight parts.
Side engines and back are used in space when Serenity is slowly flying by the bad guys toward the planet with the moon that looks very similar to the one on the cover. Don’t see the moon in that scene but you do see the moon in a River scene.
Interestingly, that’s the series version of Serenity–note the engines.
It’s not the best, but it works for me….
Well i own the HD DVD version of this movie. I won’t buy it on sd but because this was one of the first HD DVD films the re-release over-seas was re-encoded. It not only looks better but there was more room for extra features. I’d snatch up this if they came out with a 2 disk hd dvd version.
It’s plenty shiny, but I dont like Mal’s gun, it’s too…big.
