“Marry Me”
(to the tune of “Fhir A Bhata (The Boatman)”)
by Heather Ackroyd
(Listen to it here)
You are my one love, my heart’s desire
I feel my soul burn with unquenched fire.
Yolanda Haymer, please say it aloud,
I’ll be yours, Durran, among the clouds.
Oh won’t you marry this lonely lady?
You are my one love, no ‘if’ or ‘maybe’
My heart is smitten, no chance of goodbye
I will be true, love, until I die.
I was so frightened, my heart it trembled
My father chose you from those assembled
No gentler man could he choose me to wife,
Now Saffron Reynolds is yours for life.
Won’t you marry this lonely lady?
You are my one love, no ‘if’ or ‘maybe’
My heart is smitten, no chance of goodbye
I will be true, love, until I die.
My dearest Monty, I’m filled with passion
Without your warm touch, my life is ashen
I’ll be your Bridgit, today, forever
Our bond eternal, nothing can sever.
Won’t you marry this lonely lady?
You are my one love, no ‘if’ or ‘maybe’
My heart is smitten, no chance of goodbye
I will be true, love, until I die.
Won’t you marry this lonely lady?
You are my one love, no ‘if’ or ‘maybe’
My heart is smitten, no chance of goodbye
I will be true, love, until I die.
I will be true, love, until you die…

From the creator:
“I wanted to write a song that was from Yo-Saff-Bridge’s point of view, but wherein she stayed in character. So this is the tale of each of the three conquests we know of from Firefly where she takes on the appropriate persona for the role she’s playing in each case. If I ever perform this (and since I’m going on the Browncoat Cruise I may well wind up singing it if we do the filk night that’s being discussed), then I’d change my look and stance for each verse as well as the tone.
“The song is filk, in that it’s based on an existing tune, but since said tune is a couple of hundred years old it’s well and truly in the public domain so I’ve sent a recording. (It’s the tune for Fhir A Bhata (The Boatman), a traditional celtic song about a woman waiting for her lover who has gone to sea.) Unfortunately, I couldn’t use a backing track for the tune since any performances of it are copyrighted, so I wound up having to accompany myself a capella – I don’t play guitar or anything useful that I could use for accompaniment.”
