Stand back! I’m about to try something new. Well, new to me, I understand other people have been enjoying it for ten, twenty years now. I am starting to listen to country and western music. I’ve had no problem ignoring it for most of the rest of my life. Songs about missing trucks, dawgs, and cheatin’ wives were not songs that really spoke to my lifestyle unless there’s something my wife wants to tell me. Or something my dawg wants to tell me. But I’ve stuck an ear in the vicinity. I like southern rock, The Eagles, Lynyrd Skynrd, Charlie Daniels, Bob Seger, and the definitions seem to change from person to person anyway. There have been country songs that have snuck into my consciousness and remained, and I like funny songs of any genre, like Randy Travis’ “Before You Kill Us All,” Jim Stafford’s “Wild Wood Weed,” and everything by Tim Wilson. And it does seem silly to dismiss an entire world of music just because I’m afraid I’ll accidentally hear “Achy Breaky Heart” and have to punch somebody. So I started asking friends for recommendations. “Nothing ‘twangy,” I asked, and nothing involving anguished steel guitar heartbreak. I’ve gotten a lot of suggestions. A lot. For the next little while I’ll be sampling the world of country music and I’ll come back here and report on my findings. Keep in mind that I really can’t tell you my musical tastes or why I’ll play some songs over and over for weeks and why some physically repel me, but I’ll let you know if any of this stuff sticks and maybe why. And we’re off! Ah one, ah two, ah one two three…
