Fiona Apple has a new album out. Sort of.
Seems she completed an album called “Extraordinary Machine” two years ago, but it wasn’t released by Sony for whatever reason. Likely because it wasn’t commercial enough or didn’t have a breakaway pop hit or whatever. Two of the songs were leaked on the Internet last year and have been widely spread around by Fiona fans. SFGate.com columnist Mark Morford wrote about it today.
Now a DJ in Seattle has the whole thing — dunno how — and has been playing it over and over, to appreciative listeners who have begun calling other radio stations to demand it. And, of course, all the mp3s are now available to anyone with some Google time. Something I thought was interesting: it popped up at www.rateyourmusic.com, which means you can now rate an album that’s never officially existed.
So the question now is, will Sony respond to the proven fan interest and release the album, or will they just clam up and sue everybody?
