OK, you could do better. And you really, really should.
It’s dawned on me that although fans have written beautiful, funny, emotional songs about Mal, and the crew, and the ship, and the ‘verse, we’ve never heard any original songs about my favorite character, Saffron. As far as I can tell, there are exactly two: Saffron’s wedding song from the soundtrack (later covered by The Bedlam Bards on their “On the Drift” CD) and “Saffron,” a filk to the tune of Gordon Lightfoot’s “Sundown” by the immortal Lux Lucre.
That’s it? I can’t understand this. YoSaffBridge is definitely someone who would inspire songs. Cautionary ones, at least. We’ve seen stories, poems, even limericks, but where are the ballads about this beautiful, deceitful redhead?
Well, they’re here. During June, anyway. I’m announcing “Sing a Song of Saffron,” a month-long contest for great prizes, to be judged by me, The Bedlam Bards, and Saffron herself, Christina Hendricks! Check below for details.

| ORIGINAL SONGS Write and record your best Saffron-related song and send it in! Must be original to you, and submitted as an unencrypted MP3. Doesn’t have to be studio or even concert quality, just do your best. You can also submit written lyrics and music, but what fun is that? All songs will be posted online as they’re received, The winner will get:
A custom-made Barbie Saffron doll, crafted by my wife Teresa. She doesn’t make these to sell, so you won’t get one any other way (the pic is of my own Saffron doll, yours will be slightly different).

FILKS Give me your best shot and your funniest filk. Or your saddest one, for that matter. (“Filks” are songs written with new lyrics to existing songs) If your filk uses a copyrighted tune, please submit only the lyrics. The winner will receive:
A print of the Saffron portrait by Jason Palmer, created for the cover of the FX 2007 program. Runners-up in both categories will receive gift certificates good for a QMx Serenity money pack from TFAW.com.

There will also be a Browncoats’ Choice Award, given to whomever wins the popular poll held after the contest closes. That person/group will get a “YoSaffBridge Husband’s Club” tee from BlackMarketBeagles.com and an autographed photo of Christina Hendricks.

| Christina Hendricks is a beautiful young actress who began her career as the opportunistic, career climbing intern on Showtime’s “Beggars and Choosers” before moving on to numerous appearances on “The Big Time,” “ER,” and “The Court,” “Kevin Hill,” “Without a Trace,” “Cold Case,” and as Saffron on “Firefly” for which we love her so. This spring she will start production as one of the leads in the new series “Mad Men.” |

| The Bedlam Bards are Cedric and Hawke, who roam the country playing their songs and brightening the hearts of young and old. Along with beautiful Celtic and Irish pieces and some roguish tunes of their own, they’re also known for their Browncoat anthem “The Ballad of Joss” and their later Firefly-inspired CD, “On the Drift.”

And everyone who enters will receive a free pack of five marriage licenses from around the ‘verse, with the bride’s part helpfully filled in for you. You never know when you’ll be in a marryin’ mood!
Please note that the prize stash may change as the month goes on. At least these prizes will be awarded; if I get more stuff to give out I’ll add it as we go.
RULES:
1. Entries must be received between June 1 and June 30, 2007, in the requested forms (MP3 or lyrics/music for original songs, lyrics for filks, see below for submission details).
2. Entries must be e-mailed to cabridges@gmail.com.
3. You may enter as often as you like, but only one marriage license pack will be sent out per household.
4. You must be 18 or older.
5. Contest is open to US and Canadian entries. Folk from other countries are welcome to enter, but I need an address on this continent to ship to, postage being what it is.
6. All entries will be posted online. After the contest ends on June 30, 2007, a poll will be set up for the public to vote for their favorite song. Winners will be announced on July 15th, 2007.
7. All prizes will be awarded. If I do not hear from the winners by July 31, 2007, the appropriate runner-up will receive the prize and another runner-up will be chosen.
SUBMISSIONS:
All entries must be submitted to cabridges@gmail.com.
If you are submitting a recording it must be an unencrypted MP3. Lyrics and music should be in PDF form, and lyrics by themselves can be a text/doc file or in the body of the e-mail. Please include your name, address, title of the song, your preferred pseudonym or band name (if any), and the original song title (if it’s a filk). Feel free to tell me about the song if you like; why you wrote it, what it means, etc. If e-mail is a problem — like if you’ve written a three hour opera and don’t want to break gmail — contact me and I’ll provide an address where you can mail a CD.
By submitting an entry you grant me the right to post and/or broadcast your song publicly for a period of three (3) months and use selected portions to promote the contest; all other rights remain with you.

i think Saffron would have liked to expand her husband pool a little.
after all, if she got a hubby on each planet, the holly land should not be a problem… after all, are’nt we being called the 51st state by all those who hates both US and israel? i think we should stick together in such important matters like war on terorism and marring sci-fi’s most wonderfull bacheloret. oh that could be a nice reality show…

Sorry, no Bedlam Bards entries. At least, no official ones; I wouldn’t be the one to tell the gents not to make their own. Maybe listening to your entries will force them to write one, just for their own pride…
The US and Canada limitation was because I can’t afford postage for the prizes elsewhere, and charging people postage to get their winnings sounded cheesy to me. If you have a friend or family member in the US I can ship to, you can submit entries from anywhere you like.
